Police, IPOB Members After My Life, Nigerian Man, Somtochukwu Claims
The media space has been awash with several reports about attacks on members & perceived associates of the Indigenous peoples of Biafra (IPOB) by the Nigerian govt, a move aimed at checkmating their activities and influence among the populace.
While it is generally said that IPOB is a lawful & peaceful movement championing their course within the ambit of the laws of the federal republic of Nigeria, some persons will readily disagree with this notion, describing IPOB actions as oppressive.
This is the sad experience of one Mr. Francis Somtochukwu Okonkwo, a native of Nnewi in Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State but residing at New Haven metropolis of Enugu in Enugu State, Nigeria.
Narrating his ordeal to our reporter through telephone conversation, Mr. Francis Somtochukwu Okonkwo said the Police and IPOB Members are after his life because of his closeness & association to a well known member of IPOB.
On 18th December, 2023, one of his friends who was a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was apprehended by the police. The police came looking for him at his apartment as they thought he was one of the IPOB members since he was always seen around his friend Chuka who was an IPOB member.
According to Mr Okonkwo, he was not at home when the police operatives stormed his residence. The rest of the IPOB members who knew him thought he was the one who had given the police information about their whereabouts and came looking for him.
When they got to his house on the 21st of December 2023, he had already fled from the police because his life was threatened. They went on rampage, destroying his property while setting his car ablaze as they could not find him. On the 6th of January, 2024 they (IPOB Members) saw him in the New Haven area and took him away to a forest and started torturing him saying; he was the one who gave the police information about them, that they were going to kill him and his family, he narrated that he was lucky some hunters heard noise from afar and began to shoot, which made them to abandon him and ran away thinking it was the Police. That was how he was able to escape and ran for his life" he narrated.
Mr. Francis Okonkwo, therefore, urged the international community to come to the aid of thousands of innocent Nigerians languishing in prisons, harassed and tortured for crimes they know nothing about.
